What a great year it has been for the 34 members of Southern Boyz Bass Club. We had a 26lb sack brought to the scales, a 10lb bass weighed in, 12 fish over 6lbs were caught, a night tournament (first one in years), 8 out of 9 tournaments had a different winner, two new first time winners, and a AOY race that came down to the last tournament. With 8 tournaments in the books the AOY title came down to a 3 man race between Kevin Woodson, Wallace Woodson, and Josh Sikes. We have never had a 3 man race this close to the end of the season. The battle for the AOY title would take place at Red River Pool 1. For it being the last tournament of the year we had a great turnout with 22 anglers showing up to fish. Fishing conditions were typical for a late September tournament. Weather was a little cooler in the morning and warming during the day. The river had little to no current flowing, the main river water was a little dirty, and fishing was tough. Keeper fish were very hard to find and 5 fish limits were few and far between. When everything was said and done, Todd Drury was the man on top.
Todd (aka “Doc”) brought a 5 fish limit weighing in at 9.67lbs. Todd said all of his fish came on a medium diving crankbait on sandbars at the mouths of oxbows. He said if he wasn’t digging in the mud he wasn’t getting bit. Every time some current would be coming in or out of the sandbars he would get bit. I believe this is Todd’s 2nd SBBC win. Second place went to Kevin Woodson. Kevin locked south and was able to catch 5 fish for 9.24lbs. Kevin caught 4 fish in the Black River on a beaver and 1 in the Red River on a finesse worm. Keith King brought the final 5 fish limit to the scales for 7.42lbs and a 3rd place finish. Keith and I quote said all his fish were just “JUNK” fish. He caught some on a spinnerbait, crankbait, fluke, and even an A-Rig. Whatever it takes to catch them is what I say!!! Rounding out the top 5 were Paul Woodson with 6.3lbs and Dan Stevens with 6lbs. Dan also had big fish with 4.12lbs.
With Kevin’s 2nd place finish this also gave him the AOY title!!! Congratulations to Kevin Woodson. This is his first AOY title and goes to show you what difference one year can make. Last season Kevin finished 7th in the standings and was the first man out for the Best Six (He was able to fish the Best Six after one person dropped out though). With a determined attitude and a new focus, he is now the AOY and Team Captain for the 2015 Best Six Team. Kevin told me he didn’t sleep hardly a wink all week. Its passion like that took him to the AOY title. AOY runner up is a tie between Wallace Woodson (2 time AOY) and Josh Sikes. Josh Sikes reminds me a lot of Aaron Martens… Always coming in 2nd place!!! This is Josh’s third year in a row is finish runner up. At least he doesn’t wine as much as Aaron Martens does… Though he might now!!! I have no doubt though that his time will come soon! The remaining members of the 2015 Best Six team are Brandon Nugent, Michael Watts, and Bruce Fisher.
As far as the stats for the final tournament of the year goes, we had 48 fish brought to the scales (only 3 limits) for an average weight of 1.65lbs. We had some whoppers!!!
With another season over, we can’t wait till the next one. I would like to thank everyone for another great year. We have a great bunch of guys here and this is why our club remains so strong after 8 years! Hope to see everyone back next year. Our annual meeting is usually around the middle of January so start checking the website in December for the date and time. Once again thanks to all members for everything that you do. It couldn’t be done without you.
Check out the final video of the year! Not much to show in it, but it’s fun to play with!
