CANE RIVER LAKE WINNING WAYS

Well finally after a 6 week break due to flooding the men of Southern Boyz Bass Club were finally able to have their 2nd tournament of the year on Cane River Lake. It was a beautiful day as far as weather goes, sunny/cloudy at times with a southerly wind. Cane River offers grass, reeds, lily pads, docks, and laydowns, it’s a shallow fisherman’s dream!!! The lake had been closed for over 5 weeks due to recent flooding and with the bass spawn all but over and the shad spawn just beginning, the fish were ready to EAT!!!! We had 39 anglers show up for the 2nd tournament of the year, and the angler that was able to find the biggest bass ready to eat was Brad Andes. Brad brought an impressive bag of 19.87lbs!!!! This is Brad’s first win in the SBBC.

Brad caught all his impressive fish on one magical bait. He threw a frog all day. Brad’s big fish weighed 6.96lbs, but it had a twin that looked just as big. He said he got 8 bites all day, but they sure were the right ones. That’s what you call swinging for the fences! Second place went to Will Walker with 16.63lbs. Will caught all his fish but his biggest on a senko around the reeds. His big fish which was also big fish of the tournament weighed an impressive 7.62lbs!!!!! He caught this fish punching the holes between the grass and the reeds with a beaver. Third place went to new comer Josh Bordelon with 13.94lbs. I wasn’t able to get a hold of Josh so I do not know what he was doing. Finishing out the top 5 was reining AOY Mike Barbat with 12.82lbs and James Corley with 12.80lbs. Mike made a last minute cull (I got to watch it) right at the landing that probably jumped him 2-3 spots with such tight weights being brought to the scales. This is a prime example of why you should always fish till the last minute. Those 2-3 points could come into play at the end of the year. All the top 5 finishers fished North of Shell Beach landing. Congratulations to Brad on his first win and to all of our top 5 finishers on an impressive day on short tournament notice. Being able to put a pattern together at the last minute is always impressive. Once again I would like to thank Caleb Stark from Farm Bureau Insurance for sponsoring our club and giving a $100 towards first place!

The AOY points are starting to take shape and we currently have a tie at the top of the leaderboard between Bruce Fisher and James Corley with Brad Andes not far behind. 16 points separate the top 10 and with being able to drop tournaments should make for an interesting year. The next tournament will be at Toledo Bend in 2 weeks. This will be a trailer tournament. I will post official take off time the weekend before the tournament. If multiple club members are at a landing you will take off according to point standings like usual. Also if you have a guest or are NOT getting into the side pot you MUST notify me.

I would like to apologize for everything taking so long at the weigh in. Going forward I am no longer going to work the weigh ins so I can go ahead and have the money broke out and ready to be paid while everyone is weighing their fish. To make everything speed up at Toledo Bend before everyone begins bringing their fish to the scales I am going to collect money. Also I need to start collecting sponsor money so I can get the T-Shirt order ready. I will be contacting sponsors from last year and will make sure we can get enough money with 47 members it will take a lot of sponsors.
