CANE RIVER LAKE WINNING WAYS

Well finally after a 6 week break due to flooding the men of Southern Boyz Bass Club were finally able to have their 2nd tournament of the year on Cane River Lake. It was a beautiful day as far as weather goes, sunny/cloudy at times with a southerly wind. Cane River offers grass, reeds, lily pads, docks, and laydowns, it’s a shallow fisherman’s dream!!! The lake had been closed for over 5 weeks due to recent flooding and with the bass spawn all but over and the shad spawn just beginning, the fish were ready to EAT!!!! We had 39 anglers show up for the 2nd tournament of the year, and the angler that was able to find the biggest bass ready to eat was Brad Andes. Brad brought an impressive bag of 19.87lbs!!!! This is Brad’s first win in the SBBC.

Brad caught all his impressive fish on one magical bait. He threw a frog all day. Brad’s big fish weighed 6.96lbs, but it had a twin that looked just as big. He said he got 8 bites all day, but they sure were the right ones. That’s what you call swinging for the fences! Second place went to Will Walker with 16.63lbs. Will caught all his fish but his biggest on a senko around the reeds. His big fish which was also big fish of the tournament weighed an impressive 7.62lbs!!!!! He caught this fish punching the holes between the grass and the reeds with a beaver. Third place went to new comer Josh Bordelon with 13.94lbs. I wasn’t able to get a hold of Josh so I do not know what he was doing. Finishing out the top 5 was reining AOY Mike Barbat with 12.82lbs and James Corley with 12.80lbs. Mike made a last minute cull (I got to watch it) right at the landing that probably jumped him 2-3 spots with such tight weights being brought to the scales. This is a prime example of why you should always fish till the last minute. Those 2-3 points could come into play at the end of the year. All the top 5 finishers fished North of Shell Beach landing. Congratulations to Brad on his first win and to all of our top 5 finishers on an impressive day on short tournament notice. Being able to put a pattern together at the last minute is always impressive. Once again I would like to thank Caleb Stark from Farm Bureau Insurance for sponsoring our club and giving a $100 towards first place!

The AOY points are starting to take shape and we currently have a tie at the top of the leaderboard between Bruce Fisher and James Corley with Brad Andes not far behind. 16 points separate the top 10 and with being able to drop tournaments should make for an interesting year. The next tournament will be at Toledo Bend in 2 weeks. This will be a trailer tournament. I will post official take off time the weekend before the tournament. If multiple club members are at a landing you will take off according to point standings like usual. Also if you have a guest or are NOT getting into the side pot you MUST notify me.

I would like to apologize for everything taking so long at the weigh in. Going forward I am no longer going to work the weigh ins so I can go ahead and have the money broke out and ready to be paid while everyone is weighing their fish. To make everything speed up at Toledo Bend before everyone begins bringing their fish to the scales I am going to collect money. Also I need to start collecting sponsor money so I can get the T-Shirt order ready. I will be contacting sponsors from last year and will make sure we can get enough money with 47 members it will take a lot of sponsors.

Cane River Tournament

Everyone I have received the permit for the Cane River Tournament this Saturday April 9th. This will still be a trailer tournament. You can launch at any of the 3 following locations Shell Beach, Pruddens, or Washington Street. Official take off time will be at 6:35 a.m and weigh in time will be at 3 p.m. at Shell Beach. No one can leave site of the launch before that time. Take off at each launch site will be in the order of the point standings. If you do not let me know before the tournament you will be assumed to be entering into the side pot. You must also let me know if before take off time if you have a guest fishing with you. Also as a remindar, ANYTIME the main engine is running you must be wearing a life jacket with kill switch attached. No wearing a life jacket can result in a DQ at that tournament. Also there is a 40mph speed limit on Cane River Lake so there will be NO passing. If anyone has any questions, just give me a call

Cane River Update

Everyone as of right now Cane River Lake is open, but we have not gotten the permit for us to have the tournament. I have attempted to contact the Cane River Authority and am waiting on a response. I will let everyone know as soon as I know something. As long as we can get the permit by Friday the tournament will be as scheduled. If anyone has any questions feel free to contact me.

Thanks,
Brandon Nugent

Cane River Tournament Changes

Everyone the board members have voted to postpone the March 28th tournament again to April 9th. With March 28th being Easter weekend and with limited lake options, this was really the best choice. Our plan is to host the Tournament on April 9th on Cane River if opened (and this is a BIG IF) and if Cane River remains closed then the tournament will be canceled and the club will only fish 7 tournaments this year. The board members will not vote to change lakes at the last minute for this tournament. If the lake remains closed will we move on to the April 23rd tournament on Toledo Bend. We as a board are attempting to do everything we can to not just cancel the 2nd tournament of the year, but weather dictates a lot. With all the flooding a fishing tournament is the last thing on a lot of member’s minds anyway. I apologize for any inconvenience this causes the members. If anyone has any comments or questions just give me a call.

Thanks,
Brandon

Cane River Tournament Postponed

Everyone Cane River Lake has been closed. The board members voted to postpone the tournament for 2 weeks. The tournament will now be March 26th on Cane River Lake as of right now. If by next Friday (March 18), Cane River Lake is still closed the board will vote on an alternate lake to give everyone time to go and practice at the new lake. I apologize for any inconvenience this causes anyone. We deal with the situations that are given to us in the best and safest manner as a club. I will be calling everyone this afternoon to inform them of changes.  If anyone has any concerns just give me a call.
Thanks,
Brandon

Cane River Lake Tournament

Everyone our next tournament will be this Saturday March 12th on Cane River Lake. This will be a trailer tournament. You can launch from any of the 3 main landings. Take off at each landing will be in order of point standings. Also there is a 40mph speed limit on Cane River so therefore there will be NO passing on initial take off. Official take off time will be 6:10 and weigh inn time will be at 3p.m. at Shell Beach Landing. No one is to leave the site of the landing until that time. I just want to remind everyone that you must have your life jacket on and kill switch connected anytime the main engine is running. I was notified last weekend that some members were running around without a life jacket. Coming from someone whose life was saved by a life jacket; this is one rule that will be enforced strictly. I will remind everyone of this at the tournament as well, but if you are caught running without your life jacket you will be disqualified from the tournament. I’m sure by now everyone has seen next week’s forecast for lots of rain and there is a chance if it rains enough that Cane River could be closed. If this happens the 7 board members will vote on an alternate lake if we are notified before too late Friday Night. If this happens I will contact all members with the decision. Just keep checking website of facebook page for updates. If anyone has any questions or comments just give me a call.

Thanks,
Brandon

BLACK LAKE WINNING WAYS

The 2016 SBBC season has officially begun and it started out with a bang. The first tournament of the year took place at Black Lake and as usual with all our tournaments at Black Lake we were fishing post frontal, but with one thing different this year. Usually we fish Black Lake post-spawn, this year it took place pre-spawn. Numbers of fish were down but quality was up. The morning started out in the mid 30s with heavy fog, but ended the day in the 70 degree range with bright sunshine. A lot of anglers reported having good numbers and size the day before in practice, but things changed dramatically overnight for the 43 anglers that showed up to fish Saturday morning.

There is always one thing you can count on at Black, someone is going to catch them flipping cypress trees and the person was Bruce Fisher. Bruce brought 5 fish for 17.19lbs anchored by a 6.26lber. Bruce is known for his flipping and pitching ability so the lake sets up great for him. All his fish came in less than 2ft of water on a beaver style bait rigged with a half oz weight on the South end of the Lake not far from the landing. He began catching fish on his first flip of the day and caught a few more throughout the day. At 2 o’clock he pulled into a pocket and caught 5 more in 30 minutes. I believe this is Bruce’s first win in the SBBC. Second place went to me. I had 4 fish for 15.40lbs. My fish were strictly junk fishing because my “pattern” I had figured out did not work at all. I started the morning by catching 2 fish at the bridge on a jig and shaky head and then didn’t get another bite until 2:15. At that point I caught 2 fish real quick including my big fish of 6.38lbs on a spinnerbait in about 2ft of water on the South end of the lake. Third place went to James Corley with 14.72lbs who was doing something you never hear about on Black Lake. He caught all but his big fish on a drop shot in the main creek channel on the South end of the lake. Said he seen the fish on his graph and couldn’t get them to bite anything else. His big fish (5.67lbs) came off of beaver style bait. Finishing out the top 5 were Michael “Woofy” Watts with 14.67lbs and Mark Barbat with 12.67lbs. Big bass of the tournament went to the big fish master himself Michael Watts. Michael fished weighed 6.7lbs and was caught on a jig. Michael won big bass twice last year and looks to be doing same this year. Congratulations to Bruce on his first win and all our top 5 finishers! Way to start out of the year!

So far we have 47 members signed up for the club with a good many new members this year looks like it’s going to be an exciting year. We had 43 anglers show up with the first tournament and 77 fish were brought to the scales (1.79 fish per angler). That’s not a very good average shows how tough the bite was. The average weight of each fish was 2.87lbs with 5 fish over 5lbs being brought to the scales.

The 2nd tournament of the year will take place at Cane River on March 12. As discussed at the weigh in this will be a trailer tournament. You can launch from Shell Beach, Pruddens Landing, or the landing in town. The weekend before I will announce the official takeoff time on our website and Facebook page. Weigh in will still be at Shell Beach landing at 3 o’clock. If anyone has any questions just give me a call. Also sorry no video this tournament didn’t have much to show and also nobody else had theirs with them. Remember if you have a go pro bring it to the tournament and I will add the video with mine and post a video for each tournament. Also I would like to thank Caleb Stark of Farm Bureau insurance for sponsoring each tournament adding an extra $100 to the first place jackpot. This week first place got over $500 for a small club tournament. Not a bad pay day!
