Cane River Lake Winning Ways

Weather Conditions:

Low – 29

High – 61

Cloudy

Wind – North East 5-10mph

The 2015 Southern Boyz Bass Club season has officially started. The first tournament took place on Cane River Lake with 34 people fishing. The weather prior to the tournament was cold, rainy, and just nasty making the lake’s water temp drop to below 50 degrees and muddying up some of the lake. This really affected the bite for most anglers and had everyone scratching their head. Well that is except for one. Dan Stevens was able to figure things out and brought in the winning sack weighing 17.28lbs. I believe this is Dan’s first win in the SBBC.

Cane River is known for its flipping reeds, grass lines, and docks this time of the year, but Dan took a different approach and focused on deeper brush piles in the fronts of docks. The recent cold weather had pushed those fish deeper. Dan caught all his fish on a 1/2oz black and blue jig. Always a solid choice this time of year!! Dan fished mainly north of Shell Beach. Dan’s big fish weighed 4.82lbs. Second place went to Wallace Woodson with 12.40lbs. Wallace caught all but one of his fish from one key area. He was keying on an outside grass line flipping a beaver with a ¾ or 1oz weight. Wallace said he caught around 8 keepers all day. Wallace made a last minute cull within sight of the weigh inn to put him into 2nd place. He also fished north of Shell Beach Third place went to me with 11.16lbs anchored by a 5.12 toad! Almost all my fish came off of one 30 yard stretch. Everything I caught either came off a jerk bait or umbrella rig. I fished south of Shell Beach all day. Fourth place went to Michael Watts with 2 fish that weighed 8.76lbs. This was possible because Michael had big fish of the day that weighed 6.54lbs!!! This fish was caught in a true “Professional Style.” That is a “Professional Over Run.” This fish was caught on a spinnerbait that was cast and while digging out the back lash the fish ate it!! It’s always better to be lucky than good! Finishing out the top 5 was Brad Andes with 8.48lbs. Most anglers that I talked to said the fish they caught all came off key spots. Seemed like the fish we were really bunched up in certain places. Congratulations to Dan on his first win and everyone in the Top 5. Every point is important in this competitive club for AOY race!!!

We had a total of 34 anglers show up for our first tournament of the year. The bite turned out to be tough with only 40 fish being caught for an average weight of 2.46lbs. So far we have 37 members signed up to fish this season. I’m sure we will get a few more by the next tournament. The next tournament will take place on March 14th on Toledo Bend. This tournament will also be a trailer tournament and weigh inn will be at the Pendleton Bridge Marina at 3:30. I will post an official take off time next weekend. Hope to see everyone there.

Below is the link to the video I made. With no boat race and my first battery going dead when I caught most of my fish so there isn’t much to see. I didn’t notice it dead till afterwards and once I changed it out I only caught one more!! That’s just my luck!! If any members have a go pro camera and want me to include there videos for every tournament just let me know.

Cane River Tournament

Feb. 28th Cane River Tournament

The club board has voted to keep the first tournament at Cane River. This will also be a trailer tournament now due to the large amount of people at Shell Beach Landing. You can take off from any public landing on Cane River Lake. Take off will be in order of last year’s standings. New members will take off last. Also weigh inn time will change to attempt to relieve some of the traffic that afternoon. The club will post the legal take off time and weigh inn time on the website and facebook Sunday Night. If anyone plans on fishing the tournament and NOT getting into the side pot, you must contact myself or Curt Paul before legal take off time the morning of the tournament.  We ask everyone to be courteous and patent since 3 tournaments will be going on at the same time on a small body of water. The board appreciates all members input this week and we take everything into consideration. I apologize if this has caused anyone any issues. We ask that if you know a member that doesn’t check facebook or the website for updates that you contact them and tell them the changes for the first tournament. If anyone has any questions or comments feel free to contact me.

Thanks

What a great year it has been for the 34 members of Southern Boyz Bass Club. We had a 26lb sack brought to the scales, a 10lb bass weighed in, 12 fish over 6lbs were caught, a night tournament (first one in years), 8 out of 9 tournaments had a different winner, two new first time winners, and a AOY race that came down to the last tournament. With 8 tournaments in the books the AOY title came down to a 3 man race between Kevin Woodson, Wallace Woodson, and Josh Sikes. We have never had a 3 man race this close to the end of the season. The battle for the AOY title would take place at Red River Pool 1. For it being the last tournament of the year we had a great turnout with 22 anglers showing up to fish. Fishing conditions were typical for a late September tournament. Weather was a little cooler in the morning and warming during the day. The river had little to no current flowing, the main river water was a little dirty, and fishing was tough. Keeper fish were very hard to find and 5 fish limits were few and far between. When everything was said and done, Todd Drury was the man on top.

Todd (aka “Doc”) brought a 5 fish limit weighing in at 9.67lbs. Todd said all of his fish came on a medium diving crankbait on sandbars at the mouths of oxbows. He said if he wasn’t digging in the mud he wasn’t getting bit. Every time some current would be coming in or out of the sandbars he would get bit. I believe this is Todd’s 2nd SBBC win. Second place went to Kevin Woodson. Kevin locked south and was able to catch 5 fish for 9.24lbs. Kevin caught 4 fish in the Black River on a beaver and 1 in the Red River on a finesse worm. Keith King brought the final 5 fish limit to the scales for 7.42lbs and a 3rd place finish. Keith and I quote said all his fish were just “JUNK” fish. He caught some on a spinnerbait, crankbait, fluke, and even an A-Rig. Whatever it takes to catch them is what I say!!! Rounding out the top 5 were Paul Woodson with 6.3lbs and Dan Stevens with 6lbs. Dan also had big fish with 4.12lbs.

With Kevin’s 2nd place finish this also gave him the AOY title!!! Congratulations to Kevin Woodson. This is his first AOY title and goes to show you what difference one year can make. Last season Kevin finished 7th in the standings and was the first man out for the Best Six (He was able to fish the Best Six after one person dropped out though). With a determined attitude and a new focus, he is now the AOY and Team Captain for the 2015 Best Six Team. Kevin told me he didn’t sleep hardly a wink all week. Its passion like that took him to the AOY title. AOY runner up is a tie between Wallace Woodson (2 time AOY) and Josh Sikes. Josh Sikes reminds me a lot of Aaron Martens… Always coming in 2nd place!!! This is Josh’s third year in a row is finish runner up. At least he doesn’t wine as much as Aaron Martens does… Though he might now!!! I have no doubt though that his time will come soon! The remaining members of the 2015 Best Six team are Brandon Nugent, Michael Watts, and Bruce Fisher.

As far as the stats for the final tournament of the year goes, we had 48 fish brought to the scales (only 3 limits) for an average weight of 1.65lbs. We had some whoppers!!!

With another season over, we can’t wait till the next one. I would like to thank everyone for another great year. We have a great bunch of guys here and this is why our club remains so strong after 8 years! Hope to see everyone back next year. Our annual meeting is usually around the middle of January so start checking the website in December for the date and time. Once again thanks to all members for everything that you do. It couldn’t be done without you.

Check out the final video of the year! Not much to show in it, but it’s fun to play with!

WINNING WAYS – TOLEDO BEND NIGHT TIME

Weather Conditions:

Low – 72

High – 96

Clear

Wind – South 5-15mph

The 2014 season is beginning wine down with the 8th tournament of the year now complete.  The 8th tournament took place at Toledo Bend Reservoir for a little night fishing. This was our 2nd trip to Toledo Bend this season. The first trip back in March we had a record breaking fish and sacks of fish brought to the scales. With this tournament being a night tournament there was a great possibility of those records falling, but the bite was much tougher than expected. Night fishing will either make you or break you. Well the tournament definitely made one angler’s season. That angler was President Curtis Paul.

Curt weighed in a very impressive 17.19lbs anchored by his 6.34lb magnum toad!!! Curt was able to catch his fish on a couple of different baits. His big fish came on a football headed jig before dark. He also caught a couple of more keepers during the evening on a deep diving crankbait in 15-25ft of water. Once darkness came, all of fish came on either a 10in worm or finesse worm in 8-15ft of water. Another key to Curt’s victory was to fish in the back of my boat. Nothing like getting your trail kicked from the man the back!!!!! Second place went to Curt Chaudoir with 12.19lbs with only 2 FISH!!! Curt’s big fish was 7.6lbs. That’s 2 very impressive fish!! Man the 2 Curts but a whopping on us!!! Wallace Woodson was able to bring in the 3rd biggest sack weighing in at 11.99lbs. Wallace caught all his fish around deeper docks on a brush hog. Finishing out the top 5 was Josh Sikes with 7.98lbs and guest Will Carstens with 7.31lbs. Josh’s 7.98lbs came from one fish which ended up being big fish of the tournament. This fish was caught in 35ft of water on a deep diving crankbait. Congrates to Curt Paul on his 2nd SBBC win.

Both angler turnout and fish were tough to come by this past weekend which was kind of expected being a night tournament. But what fish were caught were of higher quality. A total of 25 fish were caught. Only 2 limits were brought to the scales. The average weight per fish was 3.27lbs. That’s the highest average we have ever had.

With only one tournament left, the AOY race has come down to just 6 points. After dropping 2 tournaments Josh Sikes leads Wallace Woodson by 4 points and Kevin Woodson by 6 points. Should make for a shootout at Ben Routh for the AOY title!! There is also a battle going on for the last spot into the Top 6. This should keep everything interesting till the last moment. We had to change the site of the last tournament due to low water issues at Saline. At the last tournament it was voted to change the location to the Ben Routh Landing in Pool 1 of the Red River. If anyone has any questions feel free to contact me. Also our jerseys have come in so I will hand them out at the last tournament. Hope to see everyone there.

TOURNAMENT CHANGE

After the Toledo Bend Tournament the Club members voted to change the location of the last tournament of the year. Due to the low water conditions of Saline/ Larto the members voted to change the location to Red River Ben Routh. The weigh in time will be 3:00. If anyone has any questions give me a call.

Thanks Curt

WINNING WAYS – RED RIVER SOUTH

Weather Conditions:

Low – 63

High – 78

Cloudy

Wind – South 5-8mph

Our 7th tournament of the year took place at Red River South Marina in Bossier City and man did we have some crazy weather. Who would have ever thought we would have 65 to 75 degree weather in July!!! I was expecting water temps to be in the upper 80s to low 90s. Instead we had 75 degree water and clouds and lots of recent rainfall. The recent rain made the river muddy and fish in some kind of crazy funk. You would think we clouds and cooler weather the fish would be jumping in the boat. Well for the most part that wasn’t the case. Last year at this tournament we had the most limits brought to the scales for a SBBC tournament. This year we had only 6 limits.

But ever think that someone won’t figure the fish out. The man that was able to figure the fish out better than everyone else was new member Keith King. Keith brought 5 fish to the scales weighing 12.23lbs. Keith fished in one of the many backwaters located in Pool 5. He caught all his fish on frogs throughout the day in one small area. He worked that place over for all his fish. This was Keith’s first win in the SBBC. Second place went to last month’s winner Jason Brown. Jason caught 5 fish weighing 11.96lbs anchored by his 5.01lb beast. This fish also got him big fish of the tournament. Jason stayed in the main river flipping reeds with a beaver style bait. He said he caught around 30 fish today. That’s three good tournaments in a row for Jason. He is on a roll. Coming in 3rd was Josh Sikes with 11.32lbs. Josh’s big fish was 4.32lbs. Josh did a little bit of junk fishing throughout the day. He caught fish in 3 different backwater areas on a variety of baits. He caught around 10 keepers. Rounding out the top 5 were Michael Watts with 10.72lbs & Brad Andes with 9.89lbs.  Congrates to Keith on his first win!!

In the end, we had our lowest turnout of the year with 19 anglers. We had as many anglers this year as we did 5 fish limits last year. Not sure if it was due to the rainy weather or the distance. Six limits and a total of 52 fish were brought to the scales. The average weight of each fish was 2.05lbs.

We are down to only 2 tournaments left and the angler of the year race is very close. The top 3 guys are only separated by 5 points once the 2 lowest tournaments are dropped!! Also the last couple of Best 6 spots are up for grabs as well! Should make for a very interesting end of season! The next tournament will take place at Toledo Bend. This tournament will be a night event. Hope to see everyone there. Below is the link of the video for Red River South. It isn’t very great due to the drizzling rain that morning and my battery went dead before I was able to catch many fish!!

WINNING WAYS – CANE RIVER LAKE

Weather Conditions:

Low – 73

High – 94

Sunny & Muggy

Wind – Southwest 0-5mph

Well summer officially here and so is our 6th tournament of the year which took place at Cane River Lake. Cane River is usually known as a summer time ski lake, but the men of Southern Boyz Bass Club showed them what else you can do their during the summer!!! Cane River is full of docks, lily pads, big deep lay downs, grass, and bridges, a fisherman’s dream. There is something for every type of fisherman. Usually once summer hits, 11-12lb sacks are the standard for winning. 6lb plus fish are unheard of (except for Toledo). All the summer standards and any anyone else’s hope of winning were blown out of the door this past weekend, once Jason Brown walked up to the scales with a 20lb plus bag. This was Jason’s first win in the SBBC.

Jason brought in the 2nd biggest sack of the year with 20.55lbs. This is a great sack anytime of the year, let alone the heat of the summer. Jason told me he was “Junk Fishing.” Well I would take that “JUNK” any day of the week. Three of his fish including his big fish came off of a frog and the other 2 on a crankbait on the north end of the lake. Jason had two toads the biggest weighing in at 6.94lbs. Now 9 times out of 10, when you weigh in a fish right at 7lbs you would think you would have big fish locked up, but then you see Kevin Woodson pulling a absolute brute out of his bag. Kevin weighed in a 7.63lb “whale.” With this fish, Kevin weighed in a total of 14.58lbs for 2nd place. Kevin was also fishing north. He only had 2 fish at 11:30 when he caught his big one. He caught 2 early on a spinnerbait and the other 3 including his big fish flipping a beaver style bait into laydowns. Third Place went to Brandon Nugent with 14.17lbs. He caught his fish on both a frog and chatterbait. He fished the north end early and the south end later in the day, culling his last fish at 2:30. Finishing out the top 5 were Brad Andes with 11.26lbs & Josh Sikes with 10.72lbs. Once again congratulations to Jason on his first win and an awesome sack of fish.

Overall we had 31 anglers show up for the tournament. Good to see we still are having some good showings later in the year. There were a total of 7 limits brought in and 70 fish overall. The average weight was 2.46lbs. Limits and fish were hard to come by but overall there were some really nice fish brought to the scales. A lot better than anyone was predicting. With only 4 tournaments left the AOY race is getting interesting. With his 2nd place finish Kevin Woodson now leads, but if you drop 2 tournaments only 4 points separates the top 3 guys! This should be an interesting next couple of tournaments!  Our next tournament will be at Red River Pool 5 out of Red River South Marina in Bossier City. They have cabins at the Marina if anyone is interested. Hope to see everyone there. Below is the link to my Go Pro Video I made.

6th Tournament

Our 6th tournament of the year will take place at Cane River out of Shell Beach this Saturday (6/21). Hours will be from safe daylight which is around 5:30-5:40 so be there early till 3:00pm. We will take off according to current point standings. Cane River has a 40mph speed limit so there will be no passing. If anyone has any questions or needs directions just give me a call.

Thanks,

Brandon Nugent
